Training Programs

Reliable training built for a lifetime

Our training goes beyond obedience; it's about teaching right from wrong, fostering a fun learning environment with treats and toys, and ensuring your dog makes better decisions on their own. This is more than training—it's a lifestyle change for you and your dog!

During training, dogs live at Capital Canine HQ and receive the very best training and structure day in and day out. Each day at training camp your dog will receive multiple training sessions, social time with other dogs, play time and at least one walk. Private In-Home Lessons

Built for dog owners who have the desire, time and energy to be heavily engaged in the training process each day with their dog.

Created for dogs who are giving their owner a hard time with minor problem behaviors like jumping, leash pulling or minor barking.

Our approach with Private In-Home Lessons is to build both you and your dog’s training together. Each lesson we will work with you and your dog to introduce a new training concept and exercise. These are designed to be fun and build functional communication! Your next lesson will always build off the training concept, exercise and skill set you and your dog learned from the prior lesson — this is why private lessons are sold in packages.

Training Details & Phases

Phase 1: Establishing a Foundation

All training starts with the leash and positive reinforcement (aka: food and toys) to build mutual trust. This makes training fun and teaches dogs to pay attention.

We will teach your dog how to respond to our body language and the leash so we can give them clear direction and guidance going forward.

Phase 2: Teaching Behaviors & Commands

Our next step is to apply the foundation and communication from Phase 1 to teach your dog specific behaviors and commands. While we place a higher importance on manners over obedience, your dog will learn both during this phase.

Our obedience commands include:

  • Come (be close enough to be pet)

  • Sit (your butt on the ground)

  • Down (your belly on the ground)

  • Heel (walking nicely on leash)

  • Out (move away from a certain space)

  • Place (go onto dog bed)

  • Crate (go into crate)

Phase 3: Building Strong Reinforcement + Off Leash Training

Dogs aren’t always going to listen even when they know what you want from them (similar to people who speed because they are running late or don’t think the rules apply to them).

With that in mind, this phase is all about reinforcing the training, including:

  • Introducing new distractions

  • Increasing repetitions to reinforce new positive behaviors

  • Introduction to off leash training

Phase 4: Mastering Distractions + Applying Training to the Real World

The last stage of the training process is exposing your dog to the unpredictable distractions around Columbus, Ohio.

Here we will again challenge them and put our training to the test in as many real world situations as possible including:

  • Field trips to pet stores

  • Hangs on coffee patios

  • Walks at busy parks in different neighborhoods and city streets

We also personalize this phase based on your dogs’ initial triggers and challenges, like exposure to other dogs, reactivity in public, excessive barking towards other dogs, etc.

FAQs

What sets you apart?

We use a ton of food throughout the training process. We also understand that dogs aren’t always going to listen just because they know what they should do. With that in mind our training programs are designed to have enforcement of our commands and manners that we have clearly taught. We also understand that dogs don’t live in a vacuum, so once your dog is ready, we make a big point of training in the real world.

What training equipment do you use?

All of our training starts with using food and your dog’s leash. Once your dog clearly understand what is being asked of them, we begin using additional training equipment to build reliability within our training. These training tools can include slip leads, prong collars and e-collars. We take an individualistic approach with each dog regarding training equipment.

Where are dogs boarded when not training, playing, socializing or relaxing with a trainer?

The dogs are boarded inside of Kevin’s home and we use crates for downtime and overnight. If you have multiple dogs with us at once, we make sure that dogs from the same home are next to each other!

What dogs do you work with?

We work with pet dogs and their owners. We don’t discriminate based on breed, age, size or behavioral issues you might be seeing!

How do I pick the right program?

Depending on the starting point of your dog, and the goals you have for training, different programs may be a better suit for you. If your dog is experiencing severe behavioral problems, a longer program length may be necessary. If your dog just needs the foundations of training built, we can meet your goals with a shorter program .

During the consultation call, we can talk more about your expectations and what your dog’s current behavior is like. Through this conversation, we will help determine the best program for both you and your dog.

How many dogs do you take at a time?

We only train 4 dogs at a time in order to make sure each dog has the individual one on one attention they deserve. Each dog gets 3-4 training sessions a day (both inside and outside), and they also get play time with humans and social time with other dogs. We even put aside time each day to have down time where we relax with each dog individually.

What do you not do?

We don’t do any service dog training, and while we can’t certify your dog to be a therapy dog, we can train them to a point where they will pass their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. We also do not do protection dog training, search and rescue, tracking, show dog training.

What is expected out of clients?

We’re looking for individuals who are open-minded and want to learn new things to help strengthen the bond with their dog. We love working with dog owners who can be open and honest about their life with their dog so we can do everything possible to help you! We see training as a life-long endeavor instead of just a month long process. So we are looking for individuals who are committed to giving their dog consistency throughout their life.

I just adopted my dog recently. Is it too soon to start training?

We have worked with a handful of “recent” rescue dogs. Our training will help provide stability and structure that helps them feel more comfortable and secure.  We find that dogs truly do want leadership and guidance throughout life so the sooner that we can get started the better. This way we can help you build a more meaningful relationship with their dog and set them up for a healthy lifetime of happiness in their new home.
